The answer to this riddle goes in the comments section of this post.
Samuel Brunson was a convicted felon. He's been in and out of jail his entire life. Most of his arrests have been for stealing - shop lifting, grand theft auto, breaking and entering, etc. Right before he was released from jail the last time, he had to go before the judge.
The judge looked at Mr. Brunson and said, "Sir, we know you're a habitual criminal. I know I will see you in my court again. When I do, I'm locking you up for a very long time." Brunson insisted he was a changed man and he wouldn't be committing any more crimes.
Well...
About a month later, Sam was in WalMart doing some shopping. Addicted to stealing, he found himself entertaining the thought of putting something in his pocket when no one was looking.
Sam picked up some small, half way expensive item and begins to exam it. All of a sudden, Sam runs as fast as he could out of the store.
A few of the employees and customers run after him.
Sam stops running when he gets to the parking lot. He's scared to death as the local authories arrive almost immediately with lights flashing and sirens sounding.
But....
Sam didn't get arrested.
Why did Sam Brunson run?
The first correct answer wins.
